NovaShelf is a personal PDF reader and library organizer. This page explains, in plain language, what information the app touches, where it stays, and what — if anything — leaves your device.

1. Overview

NovaShelf helps you organize PDF documents into folders, read them, scan paper pages into new PDFs, and bring in files from links you already have. Most of what the app does happens entirely on your own device. Where anything is sent elsewhere, it's described below.

The short version: your books, covers, folders, and reading progress stay on your phone. We use Firebase (Google) for basic usage analytics and to deliver notifications. We do not sell your data.

2. Your books and library data

Every PDF you import, scan, or create, along with its title, author, cover image, folder placement, and reading progress, is stored locally on your device using an on-device database and file storage. This information is never uploaded to NovaShelf's servers or any cloud service by the app itself.

If you uninstall the app or clear its storage, this data is permanently removed from your device.

3. Camera and photo access

NovaShelf requests two permissions related to images:

  • Camera — used only when you choose to scan physical pages to create a new PDF. Captured photos are processed on your device and are not transmitted anywhere.
  • Photo library — used when you choose to set a custom cover image for a book or folder from your gallery.

Images you capture or select are used to build the PDF or set a cover, and are then stored only on your device.

NovaShelf lets you paste a link (for example, to a file on Google Drive) to bring a document into your library. When you do this, the app downloads the file directly from the link you provided to your device. NovaShelf does not search the web on your behalf, and it does not inspect, store, or share the destination link beyond completing that one download.

5. Usage analytics

NovaShelf uses Firebase Analytics — Google Analytics for Firebase, a service provided by Google — to understand broad usage patterns such as which screens are opened and how often the app is used. This helps us fix problems and improve the app over time.

Data type What's collected Purpose
App activity Screen views, feature interactions Analytics, app improvement
Device identifiers Installation-level identifier Analytics, notification delivery

This data is associated with your device installation, not with your name or identity — NovaShelf does not require an account or collect your name, email, or phone number.

6. Notifications

NovaShelf uses Firebase Cloud Messaging to send push notifications, such as app update announcements or, occasionally, relevant reading recommendations. This requires a device notification token, which is used only to deliver these messages and is managed by Firebase.

You can disable notifications at any time from your device's system settings for the app.

7. Third-party purchase links

From time to time, NovaShelf may show links to third-party bookstores or e-commerce platforms (for example, Daraz or Rokomari) where you can purchase books. Tapping such a link takes you to that company's own website or app, outside of NovaShelf. Once you leave NovaShelf, that company's own privacy policy and terms apply:

We encourage you to review these policies. NovaShelf may earn a referral commission from these links, at no extra cost to you.

8. Who we share data with

NovaShelf does not sell personal data. The only outside party involved in the app's operation is:

Your library content — books, covers, folders, and progress — is never shared with anyone, because it never leaves your device.

9. Security

Data sent to Firebase is encrypted in transit. Your library content stays on your device and is protected by your device's own security (such as a lock screen or biometric protection), which we recommend you keep enabled.

10. Data retention and deletion

Library data (books, covers, folders, progress) is retained for as long as the app is installed and is deleted the moment you uninstall the app or clear its storage from your device settings. Analytics data collected through Firebase is retained according to Google's standard Firebase Analytics retention settings.

11. Children's privacy

NovaShelf is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with information, please contact us so we can address it.

12. Your choices

  • You can deny camera or photo permissions; the related features simply won't be available.
  • You can disable notifications from your device settings at any time.
  • You can remove all locally stored data by uninstalling the app.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as NovaShelf's features evolve. Material changes will be reflected here with an updated "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
